Ship's Papers
Every vessel needs papers. Here are mine.
Master, S/V Bauerhaus. Thirty years navigating the open waters of the World Wide Web, presently serving out his final tour as Application Developer for the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, where he keeps the state's labor statistics sites afloat, seaworthy, and (mostly) accessible. Next port of call: retirement.
Owner-operator, Red Buoy Media, a two-bit outfit that hosts and builds websites for nonprofits and community groups around Juneau — the kind of harbor pilot work that doesn't pay in doubloons but keeps the community fleet moving.
Holds a Coast Guard background and once carried a ham radio license, evidence that the man has never met a form of long-range communication he didn't want to get licensed for.
Serves on the Local Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá'ís of Juneau — proof that even a man surrounded by servers and rigging keeps a compass pointed at something larger.
Skipper of Balalaika, a Cal 34, sailed regularly through the waters of Southeast Alaska. Plans are quietly underway for a longer cruise once the Department finally lets him go. Also once worked as a blacksmith and farrier, so between the boat and the forge, this crew has covered both fire and water.
Ship's Log — Photos
A running photo log of Balalaika underway — Southeast Alaska waters, the odd knot demonstration for crew and grandson, and whatever else happens on deck. Entries added as the season allows.

Other Vessels in the Fleet
A few other things flying under this same flag:
- Red Buoy Media — the harbor-pilot business: web hosting and development for nonprofits and community organizations in Juneau
- The Golden Thread — a daily podcast charting spiritual ideas through the lives of real historical figures
- History's Arrow — a daily podcast on the figures whose choices shaped what got carried forward
Footer note
Log updated occasionally, weather and workload permitting. Built on Drupal, hosted on this captain's own infrastructure, and running with a very small crew.
